Is there the best of all possible worlds? We think so. Oakfield Vineyards'
primary purpose is to research new ways to enhance the art and skill of winemaking. Our general
approach is to first determine the processes that yield high quality results, then refine them until
the results are extraordinary and the processes are practical and cost efficient for
the viticultural industry at large.
Our goal is that our investigative approach leads to new products that
lead to healthier plants, improving their fruit quality while increasing their harvest yields, and
streamline, optimize and make more reliable the overall winemaking processes.
Investigations
The Scientific Method well known by scientists and engineers consists of observations, hypotheses and
the formulation of theories. Predictions from a theory are carefully tested by experiment, with the results
either proving or disproving the theory. Iteration leads to supportable, evidenced understanding of
the grape growing, winemaking processes and related enhancements.
Winemaking
In making wine, although we investigate new methods and "shortcuts" mostly as a basis for comparison, we tend
to favor the "old school," that is,
no pesticides in the vineyard, natural ingredients including tannins from the grapeskins (not chemicals),
minimizing grape oxidation and MOG, unhurried and monitored aging,
and the proper bottling, corking, storage and
(our favorite) consumption.
With our estate wine, we individually inspect every grape and provide constant supervision and ongoing evaluation for every stage of the winemaking process. Such a methodological approach enables us to better understand and appreciate the process, minimize off-flavors, and craft superior wines.
